Back to School, Side by Side: Parents Step Into the Classroom for Curriculum Deep-Dive

Parents and guardians filled the Westside High School library Tuesday night to experience a "day in the life" of their students during our annual Curriculum Deep-Dive Workshop. The event, designed to bridge the gap between home and school, allowed families to sit in student desks, review upcoming lesson plans, and meet the educators shaping their children’s futures. From understanding new math standards to exploring digital literacy tools, the evening was packed with collaborative energy and academic excitement.
The library was a hum of activity as parents chatted about upcoming projects while sipping coffee and leafing through textbooks. The goal of the workshop was to foster a "partnership in learning," ensuring that families feel equipped to support student growth outside of school hours. For many, it was an eye-opening look at how much the modern classroom has evolved.
"Seeing the curriculum firsthand makes a world of difference," said Elena Rodriguez, a mother of a tenth-grader. "It’s one thing to ask my son what he did in school, but actually seeing the complex problems they are solving helps me understand how I can better encourage him at home."
Faculty members led breakout sessions focusing on different subject areas, highlighting the school’s commitment to college and career readiness. Mr. Marcus Thorne, a veteran History teacher, emphasized that family engagement is the "secret sauce" to student success. "When parents are engaged, students feel more accountable and supported," Thorne noted. "Tonight wasn't just about grades; it was about building a community that values education together."
As the night wrapped up, the library remained full of parents exchanging contact information and ideas for future school events. Principal Sarah Jenkins thanked the attendees for their dedication, noting that high parental involvement is a key driver in the school’s recent rise in reading scores. By working as a team, Westside High is ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed both in the classroom and beyond.
